Americo Paredes was Professor Emeritus of English and Anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin. He was the author of "With His Pistol in His Hand; A Border Ballad & Its Hero". It told the legend of Gregorio Cortez, who shot a Texas sheriff and became a folk hero as he tried to avoid capture by lawmen, and the ballad that was composed about him. The ballad ends with:
"Then said Gregorio Cortez,
With his pistol in his hand,
'Ah, so many mounted Rangers
Just to take one Mexican!'"
The legend was also turned into a motion picture called "The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez". To honor Americo Paredes, one of his former students turned folk singer, Tish Hinojosa, wrote and recorded a ballad about Americo Paredes called "Con Su Pluma En Su Mano" (With His Pen in His Hand). Leandro PAREDES Ibarra¹¹⁰³ was born circa 1813 in Rio Blanco.¹¹⁰³ He died circa 1892 at the age of 79.¹¹⁰³ Family history says he died at or near the town of Falfurrias, Texas, in 1892. Brooks County was created in 1912 from portions of Hidalgo, Starr and Nueces counties, and the family was unable to locate a death certificate for Leandro. He was a vaquero on the La Parra and El Paistle ranches, in what is now Kenedy County, Texas.

Lorenzo Paredes writes "About the year 1835, while still a young man, Leandro Paredes secured a grazing lease from the De La Garza and Balli families of Matamoros, Mexico, owners of La Parra, El Paistle and Infiernillo Grants, for the purpose of using the land as pasture for his horses and cattle; all of this land being in the vicinity of 'Los Olmos' creek". The ranch he established was named "La Purisima", and was located about three miles southwest of the La Parra ranch owned by Domingo and Alvino de la Garza and about five miles east southeast of present day Sarita, Texas.

According to Lorenzo Paredes, his great-grandfather Leandro Paredes registered his cattle brands at the Cameron County courthouse in Brownsville, Texas on January 6, 1870. Leandro's wife and family were still living near Matamoros at the time.

Again according to Lorenzo Paredes, on March 25, 1871 "Leandro Paredes acquired a 216th undivided interest in the La Parra and El Infiernillo grants, purchasing it for a consideration of $250.00 pesos from Doña Loreto Villarreal de Capdevielle and husband, Juan Capdevielle of Matamoros, Mexico (deed recorded in Book "E" pages 412-413, Supplemental Deed Records, Cameron County, Texas), this being the same interest inherited by Doña Catarina Ramirez de Rodge, resident of La Boveda ranch, from her maternal grandmother, Doña Dolores de la Garza de Garcia, and conveyed by her to Doña Loreto V. de Capdeveielle on the 28th of February 1871". Pedro PAREDES Cruz^1103,2710 was born on 19 October 1840 in Rancho Las Comas, Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He died on 25 October 1919 at the age of 79. Born in Rancho Las Comas, located about 12 miles east of Matamoros, Mexico, Pedro Paredes moved at the age of 12 (circa 1852) to Rancho La Parra, in what was then Cameron County, Texas, but is now in Kenedy County, Texas. In 1861, he moved to Rancho El Paistle, also in what is now Kenedy County. Pedro worked as a vaquero with his father on both those ranches and became very familiar with the lands and landmarks in that area. In 1867, he moved back to Rancho Las Comas where he got married and lived for the rest of his life, except for short periods when he went back to El Paistle (Pedro did not state why he went back).

When Pedro was 73 years old (circa 1913), he was summoned for an interrogation before a "juez del estado y al fiscal" (a state judge and a law officer). The reason for the legal case resulting in this interrogation is not known, but it apparently had to do with a dispute over the exact boundaries of the La Parra, El Paistle, Santa Rosa de Arriba, and Santa Rosa de Abajo land grants because the interrogation consisted primarily about Pedro's knowledge of the area, including descriptions and locations of boundary lines, landmarks, and stones marking the corners of the land grants. The interrogation consisted of 27 predetermined questions that were asked of Pedro Paredes. A typed transcription of the interrogation was found in 2010 among the papers in the files of Lorenzo Paredes and was shared with me by Lorenzo's son Sergio Paredes. Although the interrogation contains very limited genealogical information it does provide brief glimpses into the geography and landmarks of the previously mentioned land grants, place names, the locations of some of the old ranches, and the lifestyles of the vaqueros who worked in that area during the period 1852 to 1867.
