Alonso de SOSA ALBORNOZ23,3733 was born about 1549 in Xochitla, Mexico, New Spain. He died about March 1602 at the age of 53 in San Gabriel, New Mexico.3731 He was one of the Captains in the expedition which discovered and conquered New Mexico. While in New Mexico, Alonso de Sosa Albornoz asked for and received permission from Juan de Oñate to return to Nueva Viscaya because he could not provide for the needs of his family, who had accompanied him to New Mexico. Before he could return, however, he was stabbed to death by Vicente de Zaldivar and several other men. This apparently was to keep other settlers from deciding to abandon the colony in New Mexico. Catalina SUAREZ de Camuño y Llamas2867,3735 died before 1586.3736 Catalina was from Camuño, which is located some 5½ miles north of Longoria and about 4 miles west of Cornellana.
Catalina used the surname Suarez, but there is no known record of her parents using Suarez as their surname. Catalina had left the Lugar de Camuño to come live with her aunt, also named Catalina Suarez, who was married to Lorenzo Bello. It is not known how long she lived with her aunt before marrying Pedro de Longoria, but it apparently was long enough for Catalina to start using the same surname as her aunt.
Spouse: Pedro de LONGORIA. Catalina SUAREZ de Camuño y Llamas and Pedro de LONGORIA were married.2871 One witness in the limpieza de sangre of Pedro Suarez de Longoria declared that Pedro's parents were married about 1565. A statement was also made that they [Pedro de Longoria and Catalina Suarez] lived as a married couple for forty years, but that would mean that Pedro de Longoria lived until 1605 and that is impossible since Pedro de Longoria was already deceased by 1593 when the criminal trial involving Diego Suarez and Francisca Menendez and the other heirs of Pedro de Longoria took place. I believe Pedro de Longoria and Catalina Suarez were actually married sometime before 1559, the approximate year that Alonso de la Pontiga was born. After Catalina died, Pedro de Longoria married for the second time to Francisca Menendez. It is more likely that Catalina Suarez and Pedro de Longoria were married for a period closer to 30 years than 40 years. Children were: Alonso de la PONTIGA, Maria de LONGORIA, Lorenzo de LONGORIA, Catalina SUAREZ de Lama, Friar Fernando de MIRANDA, Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA.
Catalina SUAREZ de Lama2564,3737 died before 3 April 1603.2565 The expediente for Lope de Lanio, son of Lope de Lanio and Catalina Suarez, to travel to Nueva España noted that both his parents were deceased when witnesses testified on April 3, 1603. Parents: Pedro de LONGORIA and Catalina SUAREZ de Camuño y Llamas.
Maria SUAREZ1255,1756 was born (date unknown).
Maria SUAREZ de Longoria2866 was born in Godan, Concejo de Salas, Asturias, Spain.393 Some witnesses declared she was a native of Longoria, but even more declared she was a native of Godan. One witness in the limpieza de sangre of Pedro Suarez de Longoria stated that she was a widow when she married Pedro Cosme de Longoria, but the name of her previous husband is not known.
Catherina SUAREZ DE LONGORIA3738 was born before 8 July 1617 in Mexico City, New Spain. She was baptized on 8 July 1617 at Asuncion Sagrario Metropolitano in Mexico City, New Spain. It is probable she returned to Spain because Alonso de Bello signed a codicil to his testament whereby he included "las hijas de Pedro Suarez de Longoria" among his beneficiaries. Since Pedro Suarez de Longoria's only two daughters were Margarita and Catherina both of them would be included in that statement. Parents: Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA and Maria de URDINOLA y LOIS.
Gregoria SUAREZ DE LONGORIA2552 was born (date unknown).
Joseph SUAREZ DE LONGORIA294,295 died about 1661.294,3739 On page 11, Libro de Defunciones de Mazapil, Zacatecas 1667-1693, Joseph de Longoria is listed as having died on October 1, 1689. However, on page 41 of the transcription of the Protocolos de Mazapil the statement is made that Joseph de Longoria, husband of Elena de Aldaco, had already died by early 1661. Because the protocolos are listed in sequence by date I believe the 1661 death date is more likely. He was originally from Saltillo.
Joseph SUAREZ DE LONGORIA3740 was born before 22 March 1615 in Mexico City, New Spain. He was baptized on 22 March 1615 at Asuncion Sagrario Metropolitano in Mexico City, New Spain. Parents: Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA and Maria de URDINOLA y LOIS.
Luis SUAREZ DE LONGORIA3741 was born before 21 June 1616 in Mexico City, New Spain. He was baptized on 21 June 1616 at Asuncion Sagrario Metropolitano in Mexico City, New Spain. Parents: Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA and Maria de URDINOLA y LOIS.
Margarita SUAREZ DE LONGORIA292,3742 was born before 7 August 1611 in Mexico City, New Spain. She was baptized on 7 August 1611 at Asuncion Sagrario Metropolitano in Mexico City, New Spain.
Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA292,2866,2868,3743 was born about 1566 in Lorero, Concejo de Miranda, Asturias, Spain.3744 The estimated birth year of 1566 has to be considered as a gross approximation only, considering that the witnesses in his limpieza de sangre declared he was "about forty years of age". He died circa 1620 at the age of 54.3745 He probably died in mid-1620 as his widow was authorized on December 5, 1620 to receive half of his annual salary. Pedro Suarez de Longoria is identified as an uncle of Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria in the "expediente", or document granting Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria permission to travel to Nueva España. This indicates that Pedro was a brother of Alonso de la Pontiga.
Also, during testimony in a criminal lawsuit in 1593, Alonso de la Pontiga testified that he had a brother named Pedro de Longoria. Since Alonso de la Pontiga's mother was a Suarez, I believe that Alonso's brother, Pedro de Longoria, is the same person known as Pedro Suarez de Longoria.
The testimony during the 1593 lawsuit indicated that Pedro was a cleric in holy orders, and during a subsequent lawsuit in 1598 it was stated that Pedro was studying at the Colegio de San Pelayo in Salamanca.
Pedro Suarez de Longoria was named Oidor of Audencia in Mexico City and traveled to New Spain in June 1603 to assume his post. He brought with him eight "criados", i.e., young men who were to serve as his servants and/or administrative aides. The eight young men were Alonso de Camuño, Fabian Flores, Gonzalo Garcia de Menes, Gutierre de las Alas [de Salas?], Juan Fernandez de Bello, Pedro de Quincanas, Lope de Lanio and Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria. The latter two, Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria and Lope de Lanio, were nephews of the Oidor Pedro Suarez de Longoria, and Alonso de Camuño and Juan Fernandez de Bello were quite probably relatives also. One of the nephews, 11-year old Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria, became the progenitor of many of the Longorias from South Texas and northern Mexico.
Apparently, the limpieza de sangre investigation for Pedro Suarez de Longoria was not conducted before he was named Oidor, for reasons that remain unknown. The investigation occurred in January 1606 when thirty-two witnesses were interviewed in the Concejos of Miranda and Salas. All the witnesses were over the age of sixty and testified that they personally knew Pedro Suarez de Longoria and his family. Each of the witnesses described Pedro's grandparents as "descendants of Christians who had never been tried by the Inquisition".
Pedro Suarez de Longoria served as Oidor until at least 1618. He may have been removed as Oidor some time after that, for reasons I am still researching but which probably had to do with improprieties in his official position. It is also possible he served until his death, which probably occurred sometime in the early 1620's. He is known to have married and fathered children, but it is not known whether he ever actually became a member of the clergy or was a member of the clergy who subsequently left it. Additional research is required.
Spouse: Maria de URDINOLA y LOIS. Maria de URDINOLA y LOIS and Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA were married. Children were: Francisco de URDINOLA, Margarita SUAREZ DE LONGORIA, Joseph SUAREZ DE LONGORIA, Luis SUAREZ DE LONGORIA, Catherina SUAREZ DE LONGORIA, Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA.
Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA3746 was born before 3 November 1618 in Mexico City, New Spain. He was baptized on 3 November 1618 at Asuncion Sagrario Metropolitano in Mexico City, New Spain. It is possible that Pedro Suarez de Longoria returned to Asturias, as did his older brother Francisco de Urdinola y Longoria, and may have stayed there to live. Parents: Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA and Maria de URDINOLA y LOIS.
