This oral history has been confirmed by Leandro's death certificate which shows Ponciano and Nicolasa as his parents.
The 1860 Census shows that the next house visited by the census taker after he visited the Juan Longoria home was a home with only one occupant, 16 year old Nicolasa Longoria. Nicolasa thus was about 8 years older than Ponciano and lived next to or very near to the house of Juan Longoria. Nicolasa must have lost her mother before 1860, since the census does not show anyone else living there. Her occupation was listed as seamstress. Parents: Catarina LONGORIA Flores.

Octaviano LONGORIA2855 was born on 17 August 1871 in Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He died on 13 January 1931 at the age of 59 in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. His mother, Francisca Garcia, died when he was very young. His father remarried, to Encarnacion Ysaguirre, but Octaviano could not get along with his stepmother. In 1887, he ran away to Nuevo Laredo and found a job as a clerk in a combination dry goods and grocery store. Before long, Octaviano opened his own grocery store. Later, he became a beer distributor for the Cuauhtemoc brewery from Monterrey. When the United States declared Prohibition, Octaviano opened an ice plant to supply ice to all the bars that were springing up in Nuevo Laredo to satisfy the needs of the thirsty Texans. Since the bars took in dollars, Octaviano then started a currency exchange house to convert the dollars to pesos. This led him also to open a bank to handle all the cash and to satisfy the credit requirements of his customers. Some of the loans were collateralized with ranch lands, and when the loans went bad, Octaviano started acquiring the ranch lands. He then built a mill that made cattle feed from cottonseed and built plants to refine the cottonseed oils. His factory complex, called Industrias Unidas, produced cooking oil, lard, and laundry soap. He also established real estate operations and eventually built an impressive building to house his Banco Longoria. Octaviano was the founder of the multi-million dollar Longoria empire of northern Mexico.

Odilia LONGORIA Treviño2857 was born on 28 November 1918 in Santa Rita Ranch, Brooks County, TX, USA. She died on 18 November 2016 at the age of 97 in Weslaco, Hidalgo County, TX, USA. Odilia Longoria first started teaching at the Longoria school, which was located at the north end of the present day Eugenio Longoria property. She then went to teach in "Cuervitos" (now included in present day Rachal). After teaching for 7 years, Odilia then moved to the Weslaco Independent School District, where she taught for 38 more years until her retirement.
At my request, she wrote down (circa 1990) what she remembered about the Santa Rita ranch. This is what she wrote, under the heading of:
Abuelita Maria Rita Villarreal de Longoria and Santa Rita ranch
Abuelita Rita used to sit under a tree that stood between Uncle Mateo's kitchen and her kitchen. All of her small grandchildren who lived at the ranch sat on the sand to listen to her stories.
Abuelita lived at the ranch until she became sick. She went to live at Las Cuatas [a ranch just west of Encino, Texas] with her daughter Maria until she died. She was buried beside her husband's grave at Santa Rita. Her rosaries were prayed at tia Panchita's house. I guess that was when we learned all the Spanish prayers and some 'alabanzas' [hymns of praise].
She told us the family moved from La Grulla to La Blanca [a ranch in southern Brooks County] where there was a spring that provided water for them. Eugenio stayed at Mission [a town just west of McAllen] with a brother-in-law, Manuel Treviño. Leonel and Raul attended a Catholic school there.
Abuelito started looking for a site to build their permanent homes. They saw Indians wandering along springs and saw many wild animals. Finally they found a site they liked and Santa Rita Ranch was founded.
Abuelita's kitchen was large. It had a fireplace and a stove. She preferred the fireplace to cook. At night her family congregated here and did chores they had to do. The ladies carded wool, mended clothes and gossiped. The men mended their harnesses and made ropes of horses' hair or animal hides called 'riatas'. Once in a while Saturnino Ruelas, Jose Ruelas' father, came and read to the families the Bible.
At the ranch, Santa Rita, Abuelita lived with her three sons, Eugenio, Mateo, and Juan, and her daughter Francisca. Each one had a house and separate building for a kitchen. Eugenio lived with Abuelita. The first house was tio Mateo's, Abuelita's, tia Panchita's and the last one was tio Juan's house. There was another house where Nacho and Andrea lived.
Sometimes when the sun goes down, the picture of the men coming from the fields comes to my mind. While our mother prepared supper she told us stories. I remember the title of the stories but not the stories. She told us a story about 'A Caballito de siete Colores' [Pony of seven Colors] and another about 'The Blue Prince'. She also told us many sayings, such as 'Nuve en el poniente, suelta los bueyes y vente' [Clouds in the west, release the oxen and return]. It meant it was going to rain. Another was 'Borreguitos en el cielo, gorgoritos en el suelo'. Baby sheep clouds meant big rain drops on the ground.
She also told us that when they first moved to Santa Rita the men traveled to Alice to buy supplies that were needed. They bought everything in large quantities to last for a month. They traveled by wagons.
Later on, Falfurrias was founded. Brooks County was formed from three counties -- Starr, Hidalgo and Jim Wells. By that time, Eugenio and Mateo had bought trucks. It was easier for the families to get their supplies.
The 'cochera' [a building similar to a garage] served as the first school and to store seeds, harnesses and farm implements. Ninfa Treviño, my mother's sister, was the teacher. She had attended Incarnate Word College in San Antonio as my mother did. Children from La Primavera, Santa Isabel and Santa Rita attended. Later on it was decided to build schools. The Encino community wanted a large building at Encino and children from La Mesa, Santa Rita and Primavera were supposed to be transported to Encino by their parents. Eugenio Longoria was school trustee an also county commissioner for our precinct. He argued that it was not possible for the parents to transport the children to Encino. Finally, he won and Santa Rita and La Mesa schools were built. Abuelita gave 2 acres of land to build the school.
After I became a teacher and came to Weslaco, my nephews and I went to la fiesta de Santa Ana at Encino. Melchora Solis and her daughter were playing bingo next to me. She commented that I was so young and was wearing glasses. She was ninety and did not need glasses. Then she said, 'Maybe all the studying weakened your eyes'. After that she said Eugenio was the one who made it possible for Santa Rita and La Mesa to have schools of their own instead of coming to Encino.
Abuelita told us that this part of the state was almost a desert. Small brush and grass covered the ground. Then a stampede of cattle came from the north and all kinds of trees grew after that.
She told us there was a drought that killed most of their animals. The people gathered mesquite beans to feed their animals. She said people gathered the bones of the dead animals and took them by wagons to be sold. If I remember correctly the bones were used to refine sugar.
Abuelita owned 3168 acres being out [of] Share Number two (2), of the partition of the Encantada and Encino del Poso grants. She gave each of her sons and daughters 100 acres along the farm road [FM 755] and another 100 acres along the [US] 281 highway. Eugenio decided to build a home along the farm road and came to live there. Juan followed and moved to the farm road too. Mateo decided to move on his property along highway 281. Only tia Panchita was left at the ranch. She and tio Simon died. Saul built a house at Santa Rita and later moved along the farm road. Florentino was the only left at the ranch living in the house Saul built. The house caught fire and Tino was burnt. That was the end of the Santa Rita ranch."
