Capt. Jose Maria BALLI462,463,464 died in 1788.462 He was also known as Jose Maria Balli Hinojosa.462 He was a captain in the military at Reynosa. On July 4, 1776, Jose Maria Balli and his father-in-law Juan Jose Hinojosa utilized the process known as "composicion" to jointly apply for a land grant of thirty-seven and one-half leagues, claiming that they had pastured their livestock there for about 10 years and that they had defended it from the native Indians in that area. The two men agreed that the land grant would be divided between them at a later date, with Juan Jose Hinojosa receiving twenty-five and one-half leagues and Jose Maria Balli receiving the remaining twelve leagues.

The granting process was delayed for about 10 years, presumably due to negligence by their agents in Mexico City, and for another two years as they fought off a challenge by Domingo Guerra. Finally, in 1790 all the necessary approvals had been obtained; however, the two men had died by that time and the land grant passed on to their heirs. A total of 22 pesos and 7 reales were paid to cover the purchase price and associated fees. The land grant was divided according to the prior agreement between Juan Jose Hinojosa and Jose Maria Balli. Juan Jose Hinojosa's heirs received twenty-five and one-half leagues (127,625 acres) which became known as the Llano Grande grant. Jose Maria Balli's wife, Rosa Maria Hinojosa de Balli, received the remaining twelve leagues (53,140.8 acres) which became known as the Llano de la Feria grant (now simply "La Feria"), so named because of the fiestas and horse races that were held there every September. The entire land grant is in present-day Hidalgo County, Texas.

Spouse: Rosa Maria HINOJOSA Benavides. Rosa Maria HINOJOSA Benavides and Capt. Jose Maria BALLI were married in 1774.465 Children were: Padre Jose Nicolas BALLI Hinojosa, Juan Jose BALLI Hinojosa, Jose Maria BALLI Hinojosa.

Padre Jose Nicolas BALLI Hinojosa466 was the Original Grantee of "Padre Island" land grant in Kenedy, Kleberg, Cameron, Willacy and Nueces Counties in 1829.467 Padre Jose Nicolas Balli applied in 1800 for a land grant initially known as "Brazos de Santiago" and it was granted by the Mexican state of Tamaulipas in 1829. The grant contained 11½ leagues, or 50,925.8 acres. The land grant and the island on which it is located came to be known as "Padre Island" because of the Original Grantee's occupation. He died on 16 April 1829.468 Jose Nicolas Balli was ordained as a secular priest in the Roman Catholic Church about 1795. He established the first Catholic church in Matamoros, as well as the first school in Matamoros. Not subject to a vow of poverty he applied, in 1800 he applied for a land grant on the "Isla de Corpus Christi", a barrier island running along the southern coast of Texas. He and a nephew established a ranch on the southern part of the island and he was finally awarded the land grant in 1829; the island eventually became known as "Padre Island" in his honor.

The ranch he established on the island was named Rancho Santa Cruz and he also founded a mission for the Karankawa indians who lived on the island. The Padre also became a supporter of the anti-Crown movement which eventually resulted in Mexico gaining its independence from Spain. Parents: Capt. Jose Maria BALLI and Rosa Maria HINOJOSA Benavides.

Juan Jose BALLI Hinojosa469,470 was the Original Grantee of "San Salvador del Tule" land grant in Hidalgo, Kenedy, Brooks and Willacy Counties on 18 November 1797.471 The "San Salvador del Tule" land grant encompassed a total of 315,391 acres and was granted by Spain on November 18, 1797. Included within its boundaries is the salt lake known as "Sal del Rey", a revenue source for the Spanish Crown since it imposed a one-fifth tax on the salt that was sold. The road from the Rio Grande River to "Sal del Rey" was known as the Camino del Rey.

Because Juan Jose Balli had not occupied the lands for the requisite ten years the authorities determined that he could not acquire the lands through the procedure known as "composicion" but had to purchase the lands instead. Juan Jose Balli was the only bidder and purchased "San Salvador del Tule" for the appraised value of four reales per sitio (league) plus fees and processing costs. He died on 9 May 1804 at Altamira Prison in San Carlos, Mexico.472 He was charged with smuggling salt from El Sal del Rey and was imprisoned at Altamira prison in San Carlos, Mexico. He was charged by Spanish officials with smuggling salt from El Sal del Rey and not paying the King's tax. He was also suspected of aiding the cause of Mexican independence from Spain. He was imprisoned in 1804 at Altamira prison in San Carlos, Mexico, and died there on May 9 of that year. Parents: Capt. Jose Maria BALLI and Rosa Maria HINOJOSA Benavides.
