Joseph Santiago LONGORIA^1501,2409 was the Original Grantee of Porcion 4 (Camargo) in Camargo, Tamaulipas, Mexico in 1767.²⁴¹⁰ Porcion 4 is located on the south side of the Rio Grande River, in what is now the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. He was the Original Grantee of "San Vicente Chiquihuite" or "Longoreño in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico in 1784.²²⁰¹ In 1774, about 7 years after they were granted porciones in Camargo, Santiago Longoria and his cousin Matias Longoria were among those Camargo residents who established ranches further downriver, past Reynosa, on the south side of the Rio Grande. They did these without having the proper authorizations, probably following the example of others who some 30 years prior had established ranches in the Camargo area in anticipation of a future settlement there. However, the lands where they established their ranches became part of a hacienda named La Sauteña owned by Antonio de Urizar, a businessman from Mexico City. The entire area from the Rio Grande on the north to San Fernando on the south and from Nuevo Leon and Reynosa on to the west to the Laguna Madre on the east had been granted to Urizar in an effort to accelerate its colonization. This led to a legal complaint filed by La Sauteña against the unauthorized occupants of "los terrenos de la costa", or the territories of the coast, as the lands were then known. The legal complaint was resolved in 1784, when Ignacio Anastasio de Ayala, acting as the authorized representative for the unauthorized settlers, negotiated the purchase of 113 sitios of land from La Sauteña. Santiago and Matias Longoria thus legalized their ownership of the lands they had settled. All their jointly owned land was placed under the name of Santiago, but the two established separate and distinct ranches on their respective tracts. Santiago named his ranch San Vicente Chiquihuite, which later became known as Longoreño; Matias named his ranch La Canasta. The fact that all the land was under the name of Santiago Longoria later led to a long legal dispute among the two men's heirs as to ownership of the land; however, details of how the dispute was resolved is unknown to me. The Longoreño tract was situated immediately to the east of the La Canasta tract, and extended for about 6 leagues south of the Rio Grande River. The La Canasta tract was situated immediately to the east of the San Juan de los Esteros tract (owned by Ignacio Anastasio de Ayala) where the present day city of Matamoros is located. Joseph Santiago Longoria was an original settler of Camargo in 1750. He and his cousin Jose Matias Longoria served as expert appraisers when the Camargo porciones were laid out and distributed. Santiago Longoria was also one of the citizens chosen to represent His Majesty the King of Spain when the Reynosa porciones were laid out and distributed.

Santiago Longoria was the Original Grantee of Porcion 4 in Camargo (on the south side of the Rio Grande). Seabury mistakenly identifies him as a son of Pedro Longoria, the Original Grantee of Porcion 94, further indicating that there is a sale deed in the Archives of Camargo, whereby Santiago sold his interest to his brother Pedro Longoria. Seabury has obviously confused two different men by the name of Santiago Longoria. The Santiago who married Ana de Hinojosa was the Original Grantee of Porcion 4 but he could not have been a son of Pedro Longoria, the Original Grantee of Porcion 94. This Pedro did indeed have two sons named Santiago and Pedro, and it was this Santiago who sold his interest in Porcion 94 to his brother Pedro. Joseph Santiago Longoria, the Original Grantee of Porcion 4, was a first cousin of Pedro Longoria, the Original Grantee of Porcion 94.

Joseph Santiago Longoria was also one of the original settlers in 1774 in an area about 20 miles upstream from the mouth of the Rio Grande River and on its right bank (the south side). Official title to those lands were granted in 1784 and in 1793 the "congregacion" named San Juan de los Esteros Hermosos was established, so named because land for the community was donated by Ignacio Anastacio de Ayala, whose ranch was named San Juan de los Esteros. That "congregacion" grew into the city known today as Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. The ranch Santiago founded near Matamoros is now known as Longoreño.
