Jose Antonio DE LA GARZA1119,1138 was the Original Grantee of "El Tahuachal" in Matamoros, Nuevo Santander, New Spain in 1784.1363 The El Tahuachal tract was between Falconeño tract (now known as Las Rucias) on its eastern boundary and the El Potrero tract on its western boundary. It is located west of the present day city of Matamoros and extended about 6 leagues south from the Rio Grande River. He signed a will on 9 September 1794 in Camargo, Nuevo Santander, New Spain.1364 Originally from Santa Catarina near Monterrey, he was a resident of Camargo and one of the 14 original founders of the "congregacion" named San Juan de los Esteros Hermosos about 20 miles upstream from the mouth of the Rio Grande River; the "congregacion" grew into the city known today as Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

In his will, he declared that he had been granted by the King of Spain a piece of land bordering on the "ejidos" to the south of Camargo and that the grant consisted of 11 "cordeladas". This undoubtedly is Porcion 19. This porcion is noted in New Guide to Spanish and Mexican Land Grants in South Texas as being granted to "...Jose Antonio Garza, formerly a servant, who had accumulated sufficient stock of his own to merit a grant of land".

He also declared that he owned with his son-in-law Luis Antonio Garcia a piece of land "en la costa" that was situated between the land owned by Capt. Jose Antonio de la Garza Falcon on one side and the land owned by Ramon Longoria on the opposite side. This obviously refers to the land he owned at San Juan de los Esteros Hermosos, or present day Matamoros, Mexico.

Since Capt. Jose Antonio de la Garza Falcon was a large land owner in Camargo, having been granted two porciones, and is known to have had slaves, it is quite likely that Jose Antonio de la Garza had been a servant in the Captain's household.

Capt. Jose Antonio DE LA GARZA Falcon1228,1284,1285,1367 was born circa 1739 in Cerralvo, Nuevo Leon, New Spain. He was the Original Grantee of Porcion 80 (Camargo) in Camargo, Nuevo Santander, New Spain on 6 August 1768.1368 Porcion 80 contained 11,427.45 acres and is located in present-day Starr County, Texas. The modern day Rio Grande City is located on this land grant. He was the Original Grantee of "Falconeño" ("Las Rucias") in Matamoros, Nuevo Santander, New Spain in 1784.1287 The ranch established by Jose Antonio de la Garza Falcon was originally named Falconeño, later called Guadalupe, and is now known as Las Rucias. His land grant contained 31,590 hectares (18 sitios) and was the largest of the 14 original ranches established in the jurisdiction of what is now Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. It was situated immediately to the west of the San Juan de los Esteros land grant and extended for about 6 leagues south of the Rio Grande River. Jose died in 1797 at the age of 58 in Camargo, Nuevo Santander, New Spain. A lieutenant in the Cavalry Militia, he was stationed at Camargo under his father, Capt. Blas Maria de la Garza Falcon. In 1766, Lt. Jose Antonio de la Garza Falcon was ordered to investigate the Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande to the mouth of the Nueces River after rumors circulated that the English were preparing to establish a base there. In 1767, he succeeded his father as Captain and "justicia mayor" (chief justice) of Camargo. On August 2, 1767, he and Bartolome de Treviño and Pedro Joseph Saldaña were given power-of-attorney by the Camargo settlers to represent them in all matters relating to the official distribution of the porciones (land grants). Lt. Jose Antonio de la Garza Falcon took official possession of Porcion 80, in the jurisdiction of Camargo.

He apparently owned at least two slaves, as on October 9, 1771, he sold for 100 pesos a young black girl named Maria Manuela, about 8 years old, who was the daughter of Margarita Cortez, another slave who lived in his house.

He was one of the 14 original founders of the "congregacion" named San Juan de los Esteros Hermosos about 20 miles upstream from the mouth of the Rio Grande River; the "congregacion" grew into the city known today as Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Jose Salvador DE LA GARZA1003,1372 died before 14 August 1789.1282 He died intestate. Jose Salvador de la Garza was initially assigned Porcion 88 in Camargo, but this was in error because he had actually established himself on what was Porcion 89, which was assigned to Juan Jose de la Garza. The two parties mutually agreed to exchange Porciones and Jose Salvador de la Garza took possession of Porcion 89. Seabury notes that he also subsequently purchased Porcion 95 and Porcion 96.

The Porciones along the Rio Grande were all acquired under the Spanish policy of granting land as a reward to colonizers. But, Jose Salvador de la Garza soon took steps to acquire even more land by the process known as "composicion", the Spanish policy of clearing title to lands that had been occupied without the authority of Spain. Individuals who had engaged in such unauthorized occupation could legalize their occupation of such land and obtain a clear title by purchasing the land and complying with other terms determined by the authorities.

In 1770 or 1771, Jose Salvador de la Garza moved some of his livestock to pasture at a site downriver past the jurisdiction of Reynosa. Then, in 1772, he applied for a large tract of land containing 59½ leagues, or about 284,416 acres, using the Spanish process of "composicion". His application languished in Mexico City and another colonizer, Jose Narcisco Cavazos, made his own application to purchase land in the same area. This initiated a bidding competition which was finally won by Jose Salvador de la Garza at a price of 20 pesos per sitio, far above the going rate of 2 to 4 pesos per sitio. However, de la Garza'a agent successfully pleaded for a reduction in price, arguing that Jose Salvador de la Garza had been the first to settle the land and lay claim to it. The price was reduced to 10 pesos per sitio and, after paying the price and associated fees, the land grant known as the Potrero del Espiritu Santo was officially made to Jose Salvador de la Garza on September 26, 1781.

The Potrero del Espiritu Santo land grant is located in present day Cameron County, Texas; the town of Brownsville, Texas is situated on land originally contained within its boundaries. Jose Salvador de la Garza's ranch, called Rancho Viejo, is the namesake for a large subdivision on the outskirts of Brownsville. His wife, Maria Gertrudis de la Garza Falcon, became the owner of the Potrero del Espiritu Santo grant after Jose Salvador died. Parents: Joseph Adriano DE LA GARZA and Maria de ELIZONDO.

Joseph DE LA GARZA726,1377 was born (date unknown). He was a natural son of Capt. Gabriel de la Garza; I am assuming his mother was Maria de las Casas.

Joseph de la Garza apparently first proposed marriage to Maria de Lozano because there was a marriage investigation (#62-15, page 274) done on January 29, 1701. This marriage apparently never took place because there was another marriage investigation (#62-18, page 274) 10 months later on November 22, 1701 for the prospective marriage of the same Maria de Lozano and Francisco Garcia de Sepulveda. And then on April 24, 1702, there was another marriage investigation (#62-27, page 276) for the proposed marriage between Joseph de la Garza and Luisa Guerra.
